The parents of O'Grady have been Jim O'Grady who is a financial adviser as well as Jan O'Grady. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High school in 1981. Prior to shifting into Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. O'Grady started her career by modeling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was then cast as a frequent character in ABC comedy China Beach, opposite Dana Delany.
